Fabulous Foods - Brown Rice
This is one of the
best starchy carbohydrate foods. Pasta and wholemeal bread are a good and
popular choice - but too much wheat can cause problems in some individuals. Of
all the grains and cereals, rice is the least likely to provoke an adverse
reaction or trigger the gas, bloating and pain associated with irritable bowel
syndrome. Organic brown rice is the best choice and so try to switch to this
and include it in your everyday diet based around starchy carbohydrates and
fatty foods which provide plenty of essential fatty acids, rather than the
artery clogging saturated fats. Un-milled brown rice retains the B vitamin, thiamin,
which is otherwise lost in the production of white rice. The chewyness and
substance of brown rice means that it must be eaten slowly, giving the body
time to digest and monitor the intake of nutrients. Plain boiled brown rice is
a universal folk remedy for diarrhoea. It seems to have a beneficial effect on
the entire intestinal tract, soothing and cleansing it. Brown rice should be
washed in running water but not soaked before cooking as valuable minerals and
vitamins will leach out. Add it to nut roasts, risotto, vegetable soups. Rice
pudding baked with apricots, dates and walnuts is a superb combination of
carbohydrate as well as many other nutrients.
